Gallery & Management Software For Photographers

(Been there, got the t-shirt)

As a photographer I am often asked which gallery software I use or if I use an application to organise my workload. If I’m not being asked this question directly it is regularly asked on social media and other photographer related platforms.

Truth to be told there are so many different options that it really is down to personal choice. I have however been tempted by some of the comments and offers and have used my fair share of the ready made packages that are available to photographers these days.

Before I continue I will just state that I am in now way sponsored by Shootproof or Tavé, although I do have the T-shirt (well for Shootproof anyway).

I want it to do what I want it to do

I have tried so many packages that say that they are created by photographers for photographers, however, the thing to remember about us photographers is that we are all different. It’s what’s so good about our job is that we don’t have to be the same. We have our own style and that doesn’t just stop with our photography. It’s something that is also very apparent in the way that we work.

In my opinion, if you are looking for a one product that does everything package, Stop Now! You won’t find it. You will have to find different packages for your galleries and for your admin. What you can do though is find packages that interact with each other. Shootproof and Tavé do just that.

if you are looking for a one product that does everything package, stop Now!

Yes, you will find some packages that claim to do everything but the disadvantage with these is that by trying to do it all they are very limited in what you can do with them or how flexible they are. You will find that you have to work their way and not how you want to work.

So what is more important the gallery or the admin?

While it may appear that the way that you display your gallery may seem the most important as it is what is seen by the client, I may have changed my view on this.

I say I have changed my view because as a photographer the first thing that I wanted was a way that I could present my clients photographs to them and offer the full range of products that I had at my disposal. Shootproof does all of this by letting you control everything from how your gallery is presented right through to being able to create your own products and packages. To be honest the number of different options they have I haven’t been able to check them all out properly yet.

The way that I look at it now though is I was spending more time working on prospective clients. These are the ones that you are trying to attract. I had to find a way to ensure that I kept that high level of service that I said on my website that I could provide.

There are also stats out there that show that it is more expensive to gain a new customer than to keep one. If I could find a way to reduce the cost of gaining a new client by reducing the amount of admin that I did and increase the service level it had to be a winner. This is where Tavé enters the arena.

Admin made easy?

After trying various options I finally came across Tavé after it was announced that it had become a part of the Shootproof family.

I had found other applications that almost did what I wanted but there was always something lacking. It either didn’t offer invoicing the way I wanted or the reporting wasn’t there. Tavé though has so many different ways of being configured it almost endless what you can do.

Yes, Tavé does take a bit of time to get to know, however it is worth while taking that time to get it all set up.

One of my favourite parts are the workflows. They not only allow you to make changes on a global level but also on an individual level. I can finally create custom workflows for a single client if I need to.

The invoicing is powerful, creating products and packages allows you to build custom packages for your clients simply by mixing and matching the options that you create. If that isn’t enough you still have the option to add items manually.

I could go on but the best way to find out what Tavé can do is to have a look for yourself.

A gallery and admin package that work together

Both Tavé and Shootproof also interact well together. Before I have only found packages where the gallery is linked between the two. It would seem that all you can do is view the gallery from the administration package.

With Shootproof when a client makes a purchase through their gallery the financials are shared with Tavé so you can view all of the sales and costs incurred with each client from a single page.

It’s still early days, however I can see that these two will have further integrations in the not so distant future.

A personal choice

A final word

Being a creative means that we will all have different ways of working. The combination of Shootproof and Tavé works for me but it will not be everyone’s cup of tea (it may even drive you to something stronger than tea).

If you are looking for a solution to your gallery or administration needs I would though suggest that you have a good look at these two.
